The sessions with Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Foxing) struck the perfect balance between preparation and experimentation, injecting new life into the bands style of soft-hearted Midwestern indie rock with an ever so subtle Americana twist. The solidified Ratboys lineup stretched and expanded their vision in the studio, adding unexpected elements and instruments like rototoms, talkboxes, and fiddles. The result is Ratboys most sonically diverse record, shifting wildly from track to track. It flexes everything from fuzzy power pop choruses on Crossed That Line and Its Alive! to a warm country twang on Morning Zoo to mournful folk on the titular track. After more than ten years and four studio albums, The Window finally captures Ratboys as they were always meant to be heardexpansive while still intimate, audacious while still tenderthe sound of four friends operating as a single, cohesive unit.

1. A tangible sonic shift is apparent thanks to a newly-expanded lineup - founding members Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan are now joined by Marcus Nuccio and Sean Neumann on drums and bass. What started as an acoustic duo has finally transformed into a full-scale indie-rock band with a clear identity. Recorded live at Decade Music Studios in Chicago, Printer's Devil features big-chorus power pop songs like 'Alien with a Sleep Mask On' and 'Anj' that sound massive and larger than life, alongside intimate folk songs like 'A Vision' and devastating alt-country tracks like 'Listening,' showcasing once again the group's signature versatility. Almost as soon as Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan met during their college orientation, they started playing music together. What came out of their dorm rooms was the 5-song RATBOY EP, uploaded to Bandcamp on April 1, 2011 to share with friends and family. Now, to mark a decade since (to the day), Ratboys have hit the studio to re-inhabit these songs and bring them back to life. New recordings of the 5 original RATBOY EP songs make up the A-side of Happy Birthday, Ratboy, with 5 new versions of rare college-era tracks and the newly-written standout, Go Outside on the B-side. Featuring mainstays from their live show over the years, including The Stanza & Space Blows, pressed to vinyl for the first time and given the full band treatment, Happy Birthday, Ratboy introduces new Ratboys fans to the bands beginnings while also raising a toast to those whove been there from the start.

1) The Stanza\r 2) Down The River\r 3) Intense Judgment\r 4) Key\r 5) at 39 is annie the oldest cat?\r 6) Space Blows\r 7) Collected\r 8) Cacao to Cacao\r 9) Have a Heart\r 10) 88 Fingers Edward\r 11) Go Outside

Format Detail: CD

Format: CD

Genre: Indie & Alternative

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/ratboys-happy-birthday-ratboy_OTmwQ.jpg?v=1770763860
singin-to-an-empty-chair-yellow-vinyl-vinyl
Singin' To An Empty Chair (Yellow Vinyl) [Vinyl]

Ratboys – Singin' To An Empty Chair (Yellow Vinyl)

Description

Ratboys' 'Singin' To An Empty Chair' is a vibrant exploration of alternative sounds, presented on striking yellow vinyl.

1. Rather, it's the beginning of an important dialogue with a close loved one, vocalist Julia Steiner finds herself estranged from. The music on the band's sixth studio album - it's first for New West Records - fills the space that person left behind with 11 songs showcasing Ratboys at the peak of their powers - twangy, effervescent, as confident as they've ever been, and perhaps more emotionally interrogative than ever before. The four-piece Chicago band followed up 2023's highly acclaimed The Window by reconvening with co-producer Chris Walla to begin tracking at a rural Wisconsin cabin before taking the songs to Steve Albini's famed Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and later to Rosebud Studio in Evanston, Illinois. The results veer from bubbly power-pop on "Anywhere" to irresistible post-country on "Penny in the Lake," along with heart-piercing ballads like "Just Want You to Know the Truth" and an exhilarating detour into the extraterrestrial on "Light Night Mountains All That," which Steiner dubs the band's mammoth "wormhole jam." Singin' to an Empty Chair also marks the first Ratboys album written since Steiner began therapy, which the singer/lyricist credits for the clarity found across the album's unflinching examinations of relationship and self. Fittingly, as the album begins by extending a hand into the void, it concludes with a scene of serenity - all while weaving candid honesty, humor, chaos, and whimsy along the way. "It's not all doom and gloom," Steiner says. "The experience of making this record definitely gives me hope for whatever happens next."

Tracklist:

Open Up

Know You Then

Light Night Mountains All That

Anywhere

Penny in the Lake

Strange Love

The World, So Madly

Just Want You to Know the Truth

What's Right?

Burn It Down

At Peace in the Hundred Acre Wood

UPC: 607396903115
Label: New West Records
Release Date: 11.20.26
Format: Cassette

AOID starts with disarming sounds swarming and settling into a prominent, mellifluous vocal track and heartbreakingly tender strumming.
