Even vocalist Manuel Urdanetas bright warble adds to a seemingly luminous scene, but his lyrics take a sullen turn. When I go, he sings as the song climbs toward its desolate conclusion, just bury me in the backyard \/ let the dirt hit my body \/ and I hope I'll be happy \/ by then. This contrastthe brilliant, soaring songs weighted by their brooding linesexists throughout Paper Wings, but its on Few Friends, the albums delicate closing track, where the disparity is most evident. Here, Urdanetas finger-plucked acoustic creates an exquisite foundation for the albums dark last lines: Just make sure the noose on my rope \/ wont give out. \/ It won't fail me now. Of course, its because Henrietta has broadened its already sweeping sound and deepened its already dark poetry that Paper Wings is so powerful. The idea of letting go influenced the bands musical evolution as well, and is evident on songs like Sorry In My Mind, where auto-tuned vocals adorn each verse, slithering alongside the synth lead that seems the weave through the songs strutting beat. The auto-tune is clearly for effect (Cannons soulful alto needs no correcting) and reappears throughout the record, though somehow add more soul to the record. So much of This Is All Pretend feels like a natural progression for Pillow Talkin fact, the dizzy throb on Between the Frames and opener Monogamy feel like they could have appeared on What We Should Have Said or even 2014s Recreational Feelings. Allusions to past works appear on \"It Matters\" (a throwback to \"Cautioners\"), \"You Are Free,\" and \"The End Is Beautiful,\" strumming at the same heartstrings of Bleed American's more yearning moments. Elsewhere, Integrity Blues distinguishes itself with new adventures in experimentation. \"Pass the Baby\" is the album's standout centerpiece, a three-in-one journey through atmospheric textures, an expansive release, and an unexpectedly heavy coda that ends up sounding, surprisingly, like Tom Morello playing on Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile.
