It was a place where the musicians who expressed this new jazz could, from night through morning, and on again the next night, sit in on numerous jam sessions. It was a place where musicians like Walter Page, Benny Moten, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Andy Kirk, Coleman Hawkins and many more, could be found working, experimenting and Living their music. This was Count Basie’s Kansas City, and this is the Kansas City that Benny Carter has dedicated this music to. He has written an original modern jazz suite that is flavored with the elements of Kansas City stomp jazz, and tailored for the big brash sound of the Basie band of today. To Benny Carter, the different streets and places in Kansas City, where so many of these jazz greats lived and worked, and where so much of jazz history was written, evokes a mood, a rememberance of things past. He has, for this reason, titled the selections of this suite after these very same streets and places.’’

‘’The Kansas City of the ’20s and 30s is now a legend, and the music that saw it’s beginnings there has since developed and moved into the mainstream of today’s jazz. His orchestral backing during the Thirties and Forties included many well-known names in jazz. At various times, Milt Hinton, Danny Barker and Cozy Cole were in his rhythm section. The reeds included the late, great Chu Berry as well as Ben Webster. Dizzy Gillespie was in the band, some members of which, at odd moments, served as a laboratory for the style to be called Bop. “This whole new chord structure idea was interesting to me,” Milt Hinton recalled, “and I would walk the new chords behind his playing.” Cab wasn’t the least enthusiastic. Danny Barker quoted him as saying, “I don’t want you playing that Chinese music in my band.”

The main attraction, however, was always Cab—showman, singer, entertainer. The musicians’ first function was to provide musical backing and a musical setting for the man who was being called “King of the Hipsters,” and this they did, wonderfully well. So the 1967 Newport programme included those of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Don Ellis and Lionel Hampton. Lionel knew the competition he had to face, and knew that in the festival’s climatic spot – the last act on the last night – his performance would be compared with those of all the others. He prepared accordingly.

Members of his Inner Circle, the octet with which he normally works, would provide the nucleus for an orchestra largely composed of alumni from his earlier bands. When the call went out to the Old Guard, the response was magnificent, as a glance at the personnel will show. Top names in the profession came back to join him, to form one of the great all-star bands of all time. A two week engagement at The Metropole in New York, immediately before the festival, served as a prolonged dress rehearsal, where the ensembles were polished and new arrangements familiarized. Enthusiasm mounted night by night in the Seventh Avenue club, among musicians and public alike, until Newport and the evening of 3rd July were reached. Like a good general, he never lost his grasp on the situation. Step into the cosmic jazz-funk odyssey of Walking in Space, Quincy Jones' electrifying foray into fusion. The protean Quincy Jones returned to the recording studio as a leader, after a long stretch in Hollywood, with this triumphantly contemporary big band album. He re-established himself firmly with his big band jazz base while casting a keen eye on the pop scene and the world of electric instruments (even Ray Brown is caught playing superb electric bass here). Laid out is his uncanny ability to attract the biggest names in jazz as sidemen: such as Freddie Hubbard, Roland Kirk, Hubert Laws, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Jimmy Cleveland, and Jerome Richardson. Featuring unforgettable renditions of "Dead End" and "Killer Joe," this album captures the groundbreaking energy that made this album a staple of the late '60s jazz scene.

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

Availability: Pre-Order

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/quincy-jones-walking-in-space-180g-lp_197OW.jpg?v=1762343792
quincy-jones-youve-got-it-bad-girl-180g-lp-vinyl
You'Ve Got It Bad Girl [180G Lp] [Vinyl]

You'Ve Got It Bad Girl [180G Lp] is a undefined Records & LPs from Quincy Jones

Released: 06/06/2025

Availability: Pre-Order

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/25/2025

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/quincy-jones-youve-got-it-bad-girl-180g-lp_vQlIQ.jpg?v=1762343795
quincy-jones-body-heat-180g-lp-vinyl
Body Heat [180G Lp] [Vinyl]

Body Heat [180G Lp] is a undefined Records & LPs from Quincy Jones

Released: 06/06/2025

Availability : Available

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/quincy-jones-body-heat-180g-lp_j2C1J.jpg?v=1762344876
duke-ellington-1928-1962-the-essential-works-vinyl
1928 – 1962 The Essential Works [Vinyl]

Born in the 19th century, Duke Ellington moved through the 20th either initiating or accompanying every modern phase that traversed the world of jazz. He began appearing at the Cotton Club in 1927, and went on to become no doubt one of that century’s major jazz figures, recognized by both his peers and an audience that was immense. From the New Orleans style to the big bands of the swing era, from Swing itself to Bebop, and from the "Cool" to the modern jazz of Coltrane and Mingus, he composed and played with peerless musicians and made the transformation of jazz immortal, all in the course of a career lasting fifty years. His own orchestra made each phase tangible, and he composed a huge number of pieces for them. To those talents he added another: that of revealing, bringing to full bloom and giving new visibility to many, many musicians: Bubber Miley, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart, Ray Nance, Joe Nanton, Cat Anderson, Billy Strayhorn… The list goes on. Cab Calloway was a trailblazing entertainer, an early king of cool, and an American icon. In a career spanning six decades, he was a talented bandleader, known for hiring the very best talent, before going on to become a revered solo artist, actor, and author. Effortlessly breaking down racial barriers, Calloway brought African-American music to mainstream audiences. This collection of timeless tracks takes us back to his glory days as one of the most exciting young bandleaders in the history of popular music. So much more than a band leader, over nearly seven decades, this exuberant and energetic performer also shone as a solo artist, a dancer, and star of radio, stage, and screen. In addition, he was an acclaimed author, penning the classic cultural artefact, Cab Calloway's Hepster Dictionary. If you use the term Big Apple to refer to New York City, you have Cab Calloway to thank! This mighty 14 track LP concentrates on his classic releases and naturally includes the monster hit Minnie The Moocha alongside his numerous tunes following Minnie's saga. Using some of the greatest songsmith's alongside his own penmanship, Calloway and his orchestra's versions of songs such as Saint James Infirmary, Trickeration, The Ghost Of Smoky Joe, (Hep Hep) The Jumpin' Jive and The Honeydripper are sure to get you out of your casuals and into your hippest of dancing gear. This is the final ever recording of the legendary, influential drummer, whose impact across Rock, Funk and Soul, as well as Jazz, is unrivalled to this day. Recorded over 2 nights, 19th & 20th November 1986, at Ronnie Scott's in London, England. Available as 4 physical formats, as standard and Deluxe. The deluxe, Collector's Editions include a full 30 minutes of extra material, including a gob-smacking drum solo demonstrating that even toward the end of his life, his playing was unsurpassable The Collector's Editions will be available in limited batches at a time, to optimise their value, and increase collectability. Includes full liner notes by Buddy's daughter Cath, who also appears as a guest vocalist on the recording 'My dad chose set lists for the two nights that I hadn't heard before. He was always brilliant in choosing the right sets, but this time he shied away from the tried and true and went to places musically that were very different. It was as if he knew that he didn't have to prove anything anymore and could relax and go wherever he wanted and enjoy it. I think the end result proves just that. For two incredible nights I got to sit in the audience and cheer right along with everyone else. I will always remember that time as one of the greatest moments in my life. Now I can revel in the fact that, thankfully, his last recordings were caught on tape for all of us to enjoy forever. It has taken thirty-three years to finally get these recordings out. An absolute labor of love that I never gave up on. At times it was quite a struggle, but in the end it was all about the music.'

Tracklist:

Wind Machine

Night Blood

Ready Mix

The Trolley Song

Winding Way

Harco Shuffle

Just In Time

Loose

Love For Sale

Shawnee

Up Jumped Spring

Why Bother?

Porgy and Bess

Twisted

UPC: 5060708610050
Label: Gearbox
Release Date: 12.6.19
Format: CD

Duke Ellington was of course known as a bandleader and one of the greatest of all American composers, but as a pianist, he was equally as great and influential, yet often overlooked. Here for the first time on CD and digital release, we present Ellington at his refined best, in the mid 1960s. This recording was made at Columbia University in New York City, and for the most part it's pure solo piano by Duke. He gives us several of his jewels, such as Fleurette Africaine (Little African Flower), Melancholia, as well as a previously unrecorded solo version Bird of Paradise, which dates back to 1935. Of course as usual, there is the standard medley of Ellington "hits" where he is joined by bassist Ernie Shepard, and drummer Sam Woodyard for a trio setting. This 1964 Solo Piano concert reaffirms what a wonderful experience it is to hear "The Piano Player" live, doing his thing.

Tracklist:

Song Of Betrayal

UPC: 866470312001
Label: Squatty Roo Records
Release Date: 7.19.19
Format: CD

UPC: 762247505013
Label: Ghb Jazz Foundation
Release Date: 7.27.18
Format: Vinyl

2017 release. For Homecoming, there was only one guideline: All compositions had to be by Vince Mendoza. The second condition was set by the Vince himself: He wanted to use only newly written pieces - and it goes without saying - they were made to measure for the WDR Big Band. The band appreciated his high level of commitment. The recording shows, that permanently employed musicians of a broadcasting house orchestra, working in a well-organized setting, are not necessarily just "finishing a project" but can be inspired and at ease when performing. There is no hint of this tiring theme/solo/solo/solo/theme-pattern as Vince Mendoza is a true master of the organic form and the musical arc, a master of densely interwoven musical thoughts. From the Music Center in Los Angeles, to Carnegie Hall in New York; from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, to the Festival Hall in London, he really played them all. Yet, if there was one place Stan considered home, it was a simple ballroom in Balboa Beach, California. This recording is both a quintessential example of Kenton, his band and it's awesome power during this period and of Wally Heider's exceptional engineering talent he would later become famed for. Striking a perfect balance between clarity, warmth, and depth, Heider seamlessly captures here the fine jazz arrangements by Johnny Richards and Bill Holman. Recorded at The Rendezvous Ballroom, Balboa Beach, California in 1958, captured in incredible detail by the legendary Wally Heider and available for the first time on CD.

Tracklist:

My Funny Valentine

King Fish

My Old Flame

I Hear Music

You're Blasé

Cuban Mumble

I Remember You

Out of This World

Time on My Hands

You Turned the Tables on Me

Tequila

Where or When?

Artistry in Rhythm

Beyond the Blue Horizon

I Concentrate on You

Get Out of Town

Old Devil Moon

Street of Dreams

The Wind

Begin the Beguine

Everything Happens to Me

Nice Work If You Can Get It

I Get Along Without You Very Well

When Sunny Gets Blue

Nightingale

They Didn't Believe Me

UPC: 699246656517
Label: Hindsight Records
Release Date: 12.6.24
Format: CD

Stan Kenton's 1956 performance at the Macumba Club was a prime example of a band at the height of it's powers, delivering a night of jazz that was as polished as it was powerful. The San Francisco venue, known for attracting top-tier talent, was the ideal setting for Kenton and his orchestra to showcase their distinct sound - the blend of sophisticated arrangements and bold brass that had become their hallmark. This recording isn't just a relic of the past; it's a time capsule that preserves the night when Kenton, Heider, and a band of virtuosos turned the Macumba Club into the epicenter of the jazz universe, if only for a few fleeting hours. Listening to it now, you're not just hearing music; masterclass in big band jazz and recording, and a testament to these juggernauts of the golden age of jazz.
