It is safe to say that before him, the harmonica in jazz was simply not done, and Thielemans can be credited with legitimizing the instrument in the genre. Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1922. Theileman’s excelled on accordion as a small child, before picking up the guitar as a teenager after hearing Django Reinhart. Along the way, he taught himself to play harmonica as a hobby. In 1948, during a visit to the US, he sat in on guitar with a jazz group at small club in New York and was “discovered.” Engagements soon followed with the likes of Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and more. As the story goes, in response to a musicians’ union restriction, Thielemans was forbidden to play guitar at a gig. So, he pulled out his harmonica. The rest, as they say, is history. He went on to have a long and prolific career on the instrument, as both a band leader and session musician. With his unique sound, he became a go-to for film scores in the 1970s (The Pawn Broker, Midnight Cowboy). Perhaps most notably, Thielemans is unconsciously known to generations for having played the melody on Sesame Street’s famous closing theme. Organized as a purely jazz session, the date here prominently features a young Joanne Brackeen on piano. It is perhaps Brackeen’s presence that makes this set so interesting. As an avant-garde player she provides the vehicle for Thielemas to explore more advanced ideas. The album covers a wide range of material, including two originals by Brackeen, alongside standards by Coltrane, Ellington, Mercer and Mancini.

A1. Before Evans, jazz piano trios spotlighted the pianist while the others essentially accompanied him or her. Evans envisioned a trio where all three musicians were on an equal footing, where they'd truly interact. SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, recorded live in 1961, captures the original Bill Evans Trio at its peak. Drummer Paul Motian plays with grace, subtlety, and restraint that are equal to Evans's, and bassist Scott LaFaro (who also played with Ornette Coleman) has a rapport with the others that seems telepathic. Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Charlie Byrd (guitar); Gene Byrd (guitar, bass); Keter Betts (bass); Buddy Deppenschmidt, Bill Reichenbach (drums). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington, D.C. on February 13, 1962. Originally released on Verve (8432). Includes liner notes by John Litweiler and Dom Cerulli. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. The album that launched Jobim's now classic "Desafinado" Jazz Samba was released in 1962, in the early days of America's bossa nova craze and before the music lost its charm to cliche. Joined by fellow Latin jazz pioneer Charlie Byrd on classical guitar, and a discreet bass and drums team, tenor saxophonist Getz makes light and elegant music out of a collection of catchy bossas and sambas. His virtuosity, bluesy drive and smooth, soft tone make the music cook like bossa jazz rarely has since. There are still enough surprises to make this record more than just a period piece, and it stands as a fine example of Getz's lyrical genius.

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

Track Listings
Disc 1
1You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To
2Red Pepper Blues
3Imagination
4Waltz Me Blues
5Straight Life
6Jazz Me Blues
7Tin Tin Deo
8Star Eyes
9Birks Works

Released: 10/15/2013

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/Art-Pepper--Meets-the-Rhythm-Section-180-Gram-Vinyl-Import_FzIZd.jpg?v=1762298917
dave-brubeck-dave-brubeck-time-out-180g-vinyl
Dave Brubeck - Time Out (180g) [Vinyl]
Dave Brubeck - Dave Brubeck - Time Out (180g) [Vinyl]
Barcode: 886976398811

Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Eugene Wright (bass); Joe Morello (drums). Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York on June 25, July 1 & August 18, 1959. Includes liner notes by Dave Brubeck and Steve Race. Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon. The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello keeping the tricky rhythms agile and swift, the Dave Brubeck Quartet blended complexity and accessibility for pure jazz pleasure on TIME OUT, an album everyone should own.

Released: 11/22/2010

Format: Vinyl

Label: Music on Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

Miles Davis - Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (180 Gram Vinyl, Blue) [Import] [Vinyl]
Barcode: 9003829978155

Track Listings
Disc 1
1So What
2Freddie Freeloader
3Blue in Green
4Flamenco Sketches
5All Blues

Released: 10/22/2022

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/miles-davis-kind-of-blue-180-gram-vinyl-blue-import_bvEPK.jpg?v=1762299970
manneshelly-manneshelly-jazz-from-the-pacific-northwest-rsd-42024-vinyl
MANNE,SHELLY - JAZZ FROM THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST (RSD 42024) [Vinyl]
MANNE,SHELLY - MANNE,SHELLY - JAZZ FROM THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST (RSD 42024) [Vinyl]
Barcode: 875531023947

Format Detail: 2LP

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

Bill Evans is well known for beautiful harmonies and lyrical improvisation, one of the most influential pianists of his time. He grew up mostly on the French Riviera; the family left during World War II but returned upon its conclusion. According to Wilen himself, he was convinced to become a musician by his mother’s friend, the poet Blaise Cendrars. As a teenager he started a youth jazz club in Nice, where he played often.

He moved to Paris in the mid-’50s and worked with such American musicians as Bud Powell, Benny Golson, Miles Davis, and J.J. Johnson at the Club St. Germain. His emerging reputation received a boost in 1957 when he played with Davis on the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film Lift to the Scaffold. Two years later, he performed with Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk on the soundtrack to Roger Vadim’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1960). He’s probably the first non-US musician to play at the Newport Jazz Festival – it was in 1959.

In 1957 he made his very first album as leader, The Barney Wilen Quintet for the US label Guilde du Jazz / Jazztone at the age of 20. Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in France because Barney was under contract with the French label Vogue. This album reflects joy and sadness on an emotional level by the subtletly of Wilen’s musical imagination and physical releasing the essential siprit of jazz swing. On this so rare record, Barney plays with : on alto Hubert Fol, who recorded couple of times with Django Reinhardt. On Piano Nico Buninck, born in Amsterdam, is considered one of the best Young pianist in his country. Lloyd Thompson is a Young talented bassist who played with Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie and Kenny Clarke. On drums Al Levitt, 25, has already toured in the USA with Charles Mingus, Lennie Tristano, Stan Getz and Lee Konitz.

Barney Wilen (Tenor in Paris that John Lewis co-led this 1956 date with Sacha Distel, a French guitarist who never became well known in the U.S. but commanded a lot of respect in French jazz circles. The same can be said about the other French players employed on ‘Afternoon in Paris’ — neither tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen nor bassist Pierre Michelot were huge names in the U.S., although both were well known in European jazz circles. With Lewis on piano, Distel on guitar, Wilen on tenor, Michelot or Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke or Connie Kay on drums, the part-American, part-French group of improvisers provides an above-average bop album that ranges from “Willow Weep for Me,” “All The Things You Are,” and “I Cover the Waterfront” to Milt Jackson’s “Bags’ Groove” and Lewis’ title song. The big-toned Wilen was only 19 when ‘Afternoon in Paris’ was recorded, but as his lyrical yet hard-swinging solos demonstrate, he matured quickly as a sax man. It never happens, and that's ultimately the allure of this duet record. The pleasure of these eight cuts (two of them previously unreleased, all of them recorded over two days in the spring of 1962 in New York) lies in the sense of overhearing a private conversation between two particularly thoughtful people. The tunes are mostly standards, and they conjure a noirish, rainy-night aesthetic. There are a few exceptions, though--the blues come gleaming through on the limber "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the more reflective "Romain." The kickoff tune, "My Funny Valentine," is the set's cooker. Evans pecks out the melody, encouraged by Hall's deft counterlines. As Hall's solo gets under way Evans provides a pointillistic background that grows in intensity, urging on the guitarist, who replies with increasing heat before passing things off to Evans and getting into some spirited comping of his own.

Released: 9/15/2017

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/Bill-Evans-Jim-Hall-Undercurrent_0W6d7.jpg?v=1762325697
dave-brubeck-trio-featuring-gerry-mulligan-blues-roots-vinyl
Blues Roots [Vinyl]

Although this is a blues-oriented set, there is plenty of variety in tempos and grooves. Bassist Percy Heath is stellar here, playing both arco and pizzicato and alternately moving the work forward with deftness and precision. Lewis and Jackson engage in gorgeous counterpoint throughout. It’s knotty, but exotic and beautiful. Another Latin-based work here is Luiz Bonfa’s brilliant “Carnival,” which closes the set. Jackson’s melodic interplay with Connie Kay’s brushwork is subtle and rich, moving through a series of verses before Jackson takes it to the blues in his solo. Lewis keeps the pulse as Heath underscores the backbeat.

Thom Jurek/AMG

Pressed on 180gm vinyl

Re-mastering by: Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London

PPAN SD11414 -Artist-Modern Jazz Quartet

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 5 business days for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP Black

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/modern-jazz-quartet-the-sheriff_GygUY.jpg?v=1759806653
lee-konitz-gerry-mulligan-konitz-meets-mulligan-vinyl
Konitz Meets Mulligan [Vinyl]

O.K., so it’s mono. With the exception of Clarke, all the rest had played with Miles Davis in his then-experimental electric bands. Corea’s Return to Forever was just getting itself off the fusion ground, while Williams had been with John McLaughlin and Larry Young in Lifetime on top of his experience with Davis. This band, combining as it did the restlessness of electric jazz with Getz’s trademark stubbornness in adhering to those principles that made modern jazz so great, made for a tension that came pouring out of the speakers with great mutual respect shining forth from every cut — especially the steamy Latin-drenched title track. In early 1958, for a recording session, he formed a new trio without a rhythm section. For the album “Trav’lin’ Light”, his new trio included Hall on guitar and the underrated trombone giant Bob Brookmeyer. For a year, they gigged together up and down the West Coast and played summer festivals, recorded, and even played clubs in New York.

They became a trio of adventurous musicians for whom form was not an obstacle to creativity. As the year wound down, Giuffre wanted to document the trio once more, sensing its life was coming to an end. He composed the four-movement “Western Suite” with the trio’s strengths in mind, as a way of documenting how they had come together as a band during that year. The piece itself stands as a crowning achievement in a career that included discovering the talents of Steve Swallow and Paul Bley and making the truly revolutionary recording “Free Fall” for Columbia three years later. The roots of that thinking lie in this set. Jim Hall’s playing was dark, funky, ambiguous, sounding like drums and voices all at the same time — particularly in the fourth movement. Brookmeyer became the pace setter. His lines were played as stage settings for the other two players to dialogue and narrate against. Giuffre, ever the storyteller, advanced the improvisation angle and wrote his score so that each player had to stand on his own as part of the group; there were no comfort zones. Without a rhythm section, notions of interval, extensions, interludes, and so on were out the window. He himself played some of his most restrained yet adventurous solos in the confines of this trio and within the form of this suite. It swung like West Coast jazz, but felt as ambitious as Copland’s “Billy The Kid”.

The record is filled out with two other tunes, one of Eddie Durham’s, “Topsy”, and the final moment of mastery this band ever recorded, the already classic “Blue Monk”. The easy stroll of the front line with Brookmeyer’s trombone strutting New Orleans’ style is in sharp contrast to Giuffre’s clarinet playing. Which carries the bluesy melody through three harmonic changes before he solos and then plays three more. Hall keeps it all on track, and somehow the piece sounds very natural this way, though unlike “Monk”, there are no edges here — everything is rounded off. This is as solid as any of the earlier or later Jimmy Giuffre 3 records, and two notches above “Trav’lin’ Light” in that it reveals a fully developed sense of the responsibilities, possibilities, and freedoms of reinventing jazz for the trio.

Recording: 1958 by Heinz Kubicka, Herb Kaplan, and Tom Dowd

PPAN SD1330 -Artist-Jimmy Giuffre

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 5 business days for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP Black

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Jazz

This release offers a unique glimpse of a young Chet Baker in a quintet setting, complemented by a nine-piece string section.
