The fire still burns.

That's right-Country Funk is back. In the summer of 2012, a new sound blew in from the dusty desert. It was a sound difficult to pin down, to codify; a sound that, like some wild horse, resisted one's grasp. But this was no trend, no flash-in-the-pan movement, no shotgun marriage of styles, no ma'am. This sound went back decades, back to the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s when adventurous artists started to blend country hoedown harmony with the elation of gospel, the sexual thrust of the blues and a touch of inner-city grit. This was a new sound with a simple name: Country Funk. Country Funk 1969-1975, first released in 2012 and co-produced by Zach Cowie, Patrick McCarthy and Matt Sullivan, brought together a disparate group of artists that were neither bound by geography nor a shared ideology, but connected through the simple feel of their songs. Country Funk is alternatively playful and melancholic, slow jammin' and booty-shakin'. It's a sound both studio slick and barroom raw, as evident in the artists featured on Volume I: Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Dale Hawkins, Tony Joe White, Bobbie Gentry, Larry Jon Wilson, and many others. Just two years later, we chased Volume I with a new collection of songs for Country Funk 1967-1974 (LITA 116, 2014). Volume II didn't let up, dealing out all the loose-talking and lap-steel twangin' one could handle. Heavy hitters like Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and J.J. Cale shared barstools with the lesser-known voices of Bill Wilson, Donnie Fritts and Thomas Jefferson Kaye. With Country Funk Volume III 1975-1982 (LITA 194) we're here to say there's more funk left in the trunk yet. This time around, the jeans are tighter, the hair is bigger and the disco ball spins along to a country-synth beat. Produced and compiled by Jason Morgan (Bay Area DJ/collector) and Patrick McCarthy (co-producer/compiler of Volume I & II), the tracklist features regulars Dolly Parton, J.J. Cale, Larry Jon Wilson and Tony Joe White (whose track is released here for the first time) alongside new faces like Steven Soles, Gary & Sandy, Conway Twitty, Travis Wammack, Billy Swan, Rob Galbraith, Brian Hyland, and so many more. As the 1970s began to wane and the 1980s approached, the Country Funk pallet expanded to include disco beats, heavy Moog synth bass lines and more clavinet than you could shake a stick at. Volume III shows artists continuing to buck traditional country tropes and production while embracing modern soul, disco, and coked-up 80s synth-pop. This is the true soundtrack of the Urban Cowboy. A hybrid of tough and tender with an unearthly voice that seemed to embody a time long past. As is often the case with such fragile beings, she instinctively understood that the only way to survive the harshness of the world around her, was to keep herself hidden. So it comes as no great surprise that she rarely sang in public or ventured into the unnatural setting of a recording studio. Only twice, for 1969's It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best and then again for 1971's In My Own Time, was she coaxed from her habitat into the studio. Other times she made music in casual settings, sitting around a kitchen table or wood burning stove with her friends, singing and playing until daybreak.

In 1966, Carl Baron brought his reel to reel over to her remote cabin in Summerville, Colorado and recorded one of those exquisite musical evenings. Karen and Richard Tucker were rehearsing for a gig when Carl hit the 'Record' button. The result is a 45-year-old tape, carefully exhumed, documenting Karen at her most raw and unfiltered. On it are Fred Neil and Tim Hardin songs we've never heard Karen give voice to before, as well as traditional songs she uncannily makes her own, including a devastating version of 'Katie Cruel', that is so powerful, it is as if the ghost of Katie Cruel seeped into her blood. Black and white, male and female, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE were the first- and still the most significant – integrated combo in the history of popular music. Founded in November 1966 by Sly Stone by merging The Stoners with his brother Freddie’s Stone Souls, this new sound was a unique and unprecedented fusion of Soul, Funk, Rock, R&B and Psychedelia. Sly himself was a master musician who wrote, arranged and produced all of the group’s material, fashioning ingenious musical arrangements with a blend of syncopated rhythm, pop melody, lowdown funk and unorthodox harmony. And he chose the best players in the San Francisco Bay Area to implement this outrageous musical vision. With the compilation STONE SOUL we are focusing upon their rarely-heard roots and the earliest examples of the style that would take the music world by storm. This fascinating set includes the complete recordings of FREDDIE AND THE STONE SOULS, early solo experiments by SLY and ROSE STONE, the very first SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE studio session that predates their signing with Epic Records, and the tremendous 1968 demo ‘Man Does Not Live’. Also featured are the gospel sounds of THE HEAVENLY TONES, whose members would provide vocal backgrounds on multiple Family Stone albums and later become known as Little Sister.

So Ride the Rhythm and let the music take your mind!

Released: 08/25/2023

Format: Vinyl

Label: Light In The Attic

Genre: Soul/R & B

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/stone-soul-the-origins-of-sly-the-family-stone-orange_gxab3.png?v=1762301333
nancy-sinatra-lee-hazelwood-nancy-lee-again-vinyl
Nancy & Lee Again [Vinyl]

With Nancy playing up the "girly" and Lee doubling down on the "manly," the duo's 1968 Reprise album "Nancy & Lee" turned an unlikely pairing into a vocal-pop delight-and a #13 LP. Similarly, celebrated soul singer Charles Bradley (1948-2017) also found success later in life after years of obscurity, while his remarkable story was chronicled in the 2012 documentary, Soul of America, just one year after he released his debut on Dunham/Daptone Records. In 2011, the two artists shared the stage at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, playing to a sold-out crowd. While Rene soon shifted her focus to motherhood, she found unexpected recognition when her 1964 debut, “After Laughter (Comes Tears),” was used in The Wu Tang Clan’s “Tearz.” Since then, it has been sampled by dozens of artists, including Alicia Keys and Ariana Grande. Rene, who passed away in 2014, lived to enjoy many of these tributes, including this one by Sweet Tea (featuring Erika Wennerstrom and Jesse Ebaugh of Heartless Bastards, Alex Maas of The Black Angels, and Robb Kidd of Golden Dawn Arkestra). Amid debilitating stage fright, Castle soon retreated from the spotlight, but that didn’t stop her from writing and recording songs at home. Over the following decades, she built a vast catalog, spanning country, pop, rock, goth, and children’s music – none of which was released until 2017. Here, another singer-songwriter who achieved late-in-life recognition, Vashti Bunyan, pairs up with Devendra Banhart to pay homage to Castle through a dreamy cover of her haunting new wave track, “How Could You Let Me Go.”

BARBARA LYNN – “WE’LL UNDERSTAND”
(covering THE SUPREME JUBILEES)
Vocal group The Supreme Jubilees was formed in the 70s by cousins and brothers who grew up singing together in their Fresno, CA church. In 1980, the septet released their sole album, It’ll All Be Over, which offered an enticing blend of gospel, R&B, soul, disco, and plenty of sweet harmonies. Among the album’s highlights is the super-smooth “We’ll Understand,” covered in 2022 by 81-year-old R&B singer, songwriter, and guitarist Barbara Lynn, who made her return to the studio after nearly a decade. Lynn, a 2018 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, is joined by her daughter and granddaughter on backing vocals, as well as rising soul star Akelee “Dove” with production by Tommy Brenneck.

BADBADNOTGOOD feat. JONAH YANO – “KEY TO LOVE IS UNDERSTANDING”
(covering THE MAJESTICS)
At the turn of the 80s, everyone was eager to jump on the new sounds of hip-hop, including Milwaukee businessman-turned-producer Marvell Love. Hoping to make a quick profit, Love recruited a local R&B group, The Majestics, to record a rap track. While the long-running vocal act was more interested in classic funk, they would soon become known for releasing Milwaukee’s first hip-hop single, “Class A,” in 1982. Although The Majestics (who still perform today) never recorded another rap song, the 45 became a sought-after rarity. Yet, it was the ballad on its B-side, “Key to Love (Is Understanding),” that caught the ears of Toronto’s BADBADNOTGOOD. In 2019, the instrumental group partnered with Montreal singer-songwriter Jonah Yano to record their own rendition of the smooth-as-silk track, sharing “As lovers of old soul, funk, and rare recordings, ‘Key To Love’ has always had an impact on our heart and ears.”

IGGY POP & ZIG ZAGS – “IF I’M IN LUCK I MIGHT GET PICKED UP“
(covering BETTY DAVIS)
Queen of Funk Betty Davis (1944–2022) enraptured audiences with her raw and powerful vocals, her provocative lyrics, and her space-age blend of funk, R&B, and blues. During her all-too-brief career, Davis smashed several glass ceilings, including becoming the first Black woman to write, produce, and arrange her own albums. She was defiant, original, and far ahead of her time. It’s fitting then, that an equally fierce iconoclast, Iggy Pop, would cover Davis’ 1973 single, “If I’m In Luck, I Might Get Picked Up.” Backed by L.A. trio Zig Zags, the Godfather of Punk does Davis proud in this 2012 cover. The band has managed to find "a secret heavy Sabbath vibe lurking just below the funk surface,” which adds even more oomph to lyrics like “Don’t you crush my velvet don’t you ruffle my feathers neither/I said I’m crazy I’m wild I said I’m nasty.”

MOZART ESTATE – “LOW LIFE”
(covering PUBLIC IMAGE LTD.)
Johnny Rotten reinvented himself after The Sex Pistols broke up in 1978. A stylistic outlier, the understated concept album features stripped-down, Spanish-influenced instrumentation and emotionally raw songwriting as Nelson delves into heartbreaking themes of love and loss. Among its tracks is the quietly reassuring “We Don’t Run,” in which Nelson sings “We don’t run, we don’t compromise/We don’t quit, we never do.” Here, father-daughter collaboration Ethan and Maya Hawke reimagine the song as a sweet ode to love, strength, and loyalty. In 2012, Mark Lanegan (1964-2022) honored Dalton with a cover of the traditional “Same Old Man” from her 1971 LP, In My Own Time. In contrast to the singer’s stripped-down rendition, Lanegan – who fronted the seminal band The Screaming Trees and collaborated with the likes of Isobel Campbell, Queens of the Stone Age, and Kurt Cobain – performs his version over a bed of lush instrumentation – including a mellotron, a fretless e–bow guitar, and banjos – all courtesy of musician and producer, Alain Johannes.

ANGEL OLSEN – “SOMETHING ON YOUR MIND”
(covering DINO VALENTI via KAREN DALTON)
Among the artists that Karen Dalton influenced is singer-songwriter Angel Olsen. At such moments, the whole nation resonates under a groove. Music, breaking through the concrete of various colonial systems, is an incredible, often illogical, way to preserve dignity.”

While the songs collected in Even the Forest Hums were recorded during periods of immense societal and political upheaval—and certainly reflect the resilience of the Ukrainian people—they are rooted in the universal spirit of exploration: from post-war teenagers seeking fresh rhythms and artists experimenting with DIY recording technologies to an entire nation being introduced to decades-worth of previously-embargoed albums. Yet, until now, it has been nearly impossible for anyone outside Ukraine to explore the country’s flourishing music scene for themselves.

Much of this can be attributed to Soviet-era restrictions. Music, much like any other commodity, was tightly controlled before the fall of communism. “Only state-authorized performers who had gone through hellish rounds of the permit system could record at the few monopolistic, state-run studios,” explains Bardetskyi. While many of these compositions were released and performed to mass audiences, however, they weren’t necessarily what they seemed. “Some of the artists managed, even under difficult ideological circumstances, to build a whole aesthetic platform which was essentially anti-Soviet.”

Bands could slide under the radar by changing the lyrics of rock songs to reflect Soviet ideals or by performing traditional folk music with subtle outside influences. “This resulted in a whole scene that combined central-eastern Ukrainian vocal polyphony, Carpathian rhythms, and overseas grooves,” writes Bardetskyi, who refers to this era of music as “Mustache Funk.”

Examples featured in Even the Forest Hums... include 1971’s “Bunny” by Kobza. While the folk-rock group was known for their polyphonic vocals, this particular composition is an instrumental waltz, which blends elements of traditional Ukrainian music with progressive rock, British beat, and jazz-rock. Another example of “Mustache Funk” comes from the latter half of the decade, with the Caribbean-influenced “Remembrance” by Vodohrai. While the group—which included some of the best jazz musicians in the country—had a multitude of traditional hits, inspired jams like this one could, for a lucky few, occasionally be heard live.

While the 70s proved to be a golden age for Ukrainian music (complete with pop stars, large-scale tours, and legions of adoring fans), the excitement was short-lived. “The Soviet system finally understood that funkified beats quite strongly contradict[ed] [its] principles,” notes Bardetskyi, who adds that by the 80s, “The once prolific scene was almost completely colonized, appropriated, and largely Russified; the state radio and TV waves were occupied by banal VIAs and cheezy schlager singers.”

With tighter restrictions, however, came the rise of the underground. While the decade leading up to Ukraine’s independence was marked by great turmoil—including the political reform of Perestroika in the USSR and the Chernobyl disaster—it also marked a time of incredible creativity.

Mirroring global trends, the first half of the decade found many composers and producers experimenting with electronic music. Among them was Vadym Khrapachov, whose scores have appeared in over 100 films. His moody, Moroder-esque “Dance” (written for Roman Balaian’s iconic 1983 film, Flights in Dreams and Reality) is notable in that it was recorded on the USSR’s only existing British EMS Synthi 100 synthesizer.

Producer Kyrylo Stetsenko, meanwhile, was reimagining traditional songs for the dancefloor. Among them is 1980’s “Play, the Violin, Play,” by Ukrainian pop star Tetiana Kocherhina. Stetsenko, who produced the album for Kocherhina, created a hypnotic remix of the folk tune that was fit for a disco. Stetsenko is also featured here with 1987’s “Oh, how, how?,” in which he transforms a melancholic ballad by Natalia Gura into a synth-forward, breakbeat jam.

As the fall of communism approached, the scene continued to diversify—particularly as music from around the world became increasingly available. Kyiv, in particular, became an epicenter of creativity. In the early days, bands like Krok offered a preview of what was to come. Described by Bardetskyi as “The first real Kyiv supergroup,” Krok was led by guitarist Volodymyr Khodzytskyi and featured musicians from local Beat bands. In addition to backing the biggest pop acts of the day, the versatile collective explored a spectrum of styles in their own recordings, including fusion and electro-funk. They are represented here with the mellow “Breath of Night Kyiv.”

By the late 80s, Kyiv “was buzzing like a beehive,” recalls Bardetskyi. “It was a period of very active socialization and exchange of musical information and ideas; local musicians evolved with supersonic speed, absorbing decades of the world's musical background and transforming it into their sound.” While rock bands comprised much of this era’s first wave, artists continued to expand their repertoire as new influences pervaded the scene. The global rise of DIY recording technology and electronic instrumentation, meanwhile, also contributed to the growing sonic landscape.

Highlights from this period include the avant-garde improvisations of violinist Valentina Goncharova. Recordings like 1989’s “Silence” were created by a series of layered tracks and custom pickups. Similarly, composer Iury Lech paints a warm ambient soundscape with 1990’s “Barreras.” On the other end of the spectrum is the industrial “90” by Radiodelo (the project of Ivan Moskalenko—aka DJ Derbastler), which combines frenetic drum machine beats and haunting, reverb-soaked instrumentation. Post-punk was also thriving, with acts like Yarn (a large, loosely based collective) dominating the scene. “The interests of [Yarn’s] members extended all the way to medieval chamber music, which would clearly be noticeable in ‘Viella,’” writes Bardetskyi. The track features two of Yarn’s co-founding members: multi-instrumentalist and graphic designer Oleksander Yurchenko (who became a significant figure in modern Ukrainian music) and Ivan Moskalenko. Yurchenko is also represented here as part of Omi, a parallel project by the chart-topping electronic group, Blemish. 1994’s dramatic “Transference” (which features contributions by legendary Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and American singer-songwriter Diamanda Galas) serves up horror-movie-soundtrack vibes, particularly with the addition of eerie vocalizations.

Cukor Bila Smert’ (which translates to “Sugar White Death”) were also major players in the Kyiv underground. Interestingly, Bardetskyi notes, “In the reality of the general dominance of post-punk, the aesthetic message of Cukor Bila Smert’ was countercultural to the countercultural process itself.” For their contribution to the compilation, the experimental quartet provides 1995’s “Cool, Shining.”

In the years following Ukraine’s independence, Kyiv’s underground scene continued to flourish, particularly as Western trends became more accessible and Ukrainians found themselves at the forefront of their own cultural output. While the country’s music would largely evolve in new directions throughout the 90s, the final entry on Even the Forest Hums... provides a glimpse at what the future held. The album closes with 1996’s “Lion,” by Belarusian transplant German Popov, whose project, Marble Sleeves, was “one of the few Kyiv formations that tried to master jungle/drum-n-bass,” per Bardetskyi.

Though this compilation only scratches the surface of Ukraine’s vast and diverse music scene, Even the Forest Hums offers an in-depth overview of a significant period in the country’s cultural history and unites a number of influential figures in the same collection for the first time. As Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Schegel writes in the foreword, “This is our Ukrainian treasure. It is impossible to lose and impossible to win.”

Format: Vinyl

Label: Light In The Attic

Genre: International

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/even-the-forest-hums-ukrainian-sonic-archives-1971-1996-2lp-sky-blue-cornflower-yellow_Cxx8p.png?v=1762305534
nancy-sinatra-nancy-sinatra-country-my-way-bye-bye-birmingham-blue-vinyl
Nancy Sinatra - Country, My Way ("Bye Bye Birmingham" Blue) [Vinyl]
Nancy Sinatra - Nancy Sinatra - Country, My Way ("Bye Bye Birmingham" Blue) [Vinyl]
Barcode: 826853221115

The definitive vinyl reissue of Nancy’s iconic 1967 album

Contains the singles “Jackson” and “Oh Lonesome Me”

Features audio freshly remastered from the original analog tapes by GRAMMY®-nominated engineer John Baldwin

Includes five bonus tracks: the non-album 1967 singles “Love Eyes,” “You Only Live Twice,” “Lightning’s Girl,” “Until It’s Time for You to Go,” and “Tony Rome”

Vinyl pressed at RTI on black wax, "Bye-Bye Birmingham" blue wax, & "Hello LA" red & white swirl wax

Beautifully packaged and expanded gatefold LP with 20-page booklet features Q&A with Nancy & GRAMMY®-nominated co-producer Hunter Lea PLUS never-before-seen photos from Nancy Sinatra’s personal archive

Release supported by worldwide press campaign in cooperation with Nancy Sinatra

In 1967, Nancy Sinatra would continue her artistic ascent into the pop stratosphere with the James Bond You Only Live Twice theme song, the groovy technicolor television special, Movin’ With Nancy, recording one of the most beloved duets of all time, “Some Velvet Morning,” and a cross-country pilgrimage to the center of the country music scene. She articulated a kind of pre-punk, funk-blues fusion that had yet to be normalized in mainstream music – a style that few musicians have come close to replicating. As one of the first Black women to write, arrange, and produce her own albums, Betty was a visionary who disregarded industry boundaries and constraints. Raw, unapologetic and in full control, Betty paved the way for generations of future artists who said “funk you” to the music industry and social norms.

In 1979, when Davis entered an L.A. studio to record her fifth and final album, she was reeling from a series of setbacks. Three years earlier, after recording her fourth album, Is It Love Or Desire, Davis was dropped from her label and the LP was subsequently shelved. In 1978, her beloved band Funk House went their separate ways. Looking for a fresh start, Davis relocated to Hollywood to focus on songwriting. Before long, British manager Simon Lait (Toni Basil), offered to fund her next project.

With renewed vigor, Davis reunited with former Funk House guitarist Carlos Morales and brought together industry veterans like fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon and session bassist Chuck Rainey. Old friends Anita and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters) and Patryce “Choc’let” Banks joined Davis on vocals, as did Motown legend Martha Reeves. The resulting album, Crashin’ From Passion, was her most musically diverse, blending elements of reggae and calypso (“I’ve Danced Before”), jazz (“Hangin’ Out in Hollywood,” “Tell Me a Few Things”), dark synth-pop (“She’s a Woman”), and even disco (“All I Do Is Think of You”). Equally exploratory are Davis’ vocals, as she trades in her signature sass and snarls for more nuanced stylings.

Among the album’s few funk tracks is “Quintessence of Hip,” in which Davis hails musicians like Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane, while deftly integrating elements of their work. The song also offers a moment of stark vulnerability, as she sings, “Isn’t rich? Isn’t it queer? Losing my timing so late in my career.” It would prove to be a prophetic line in the months to follow.

The mixing process was mired by artistic differences and then cut short, amid the death of Davis’ beloved father. Bereft and exasperated, Davis returned home for the funeral, setting into motion her retirement from the music industry. Crashin’ From Passion, meanwhile, would be shelved for 15 years and licensed for a CD-only release, without Davis’ consent, in the ‘90s. This 2023 edition of the album, made with Davis’ full approval and cooperation, marks its first official release and first time ever on vinyl. The package was designed by GRAMMY®-winning artist, Masaki Koike, while the album cover features an incredible shot of Betty captured in London in the mid-1970s by renowned photographer Kate Simon.

Crashin’ From Passion was remastered by Grammy nominated engineer Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters and pressed on vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. Citing British bands like Wishbone Ash and Camel as influences, Yamamoto and Piper nevertheless conjured up classic American sounds on Piper’s recordings, utilizing unusual recording techniques and new technologies like Linn drums to effortlessly blend styles of funk, soul and fusion and simultaneously evoking summer vibes, autumnal breezes, and wintery shimmer.

Summer Breeze is Piper’s second album, originally released in 1984 on Yupiteru. Inspired by the sounds of Masayoshi Takanaka and Tatsuro Yamashita, as well as the concept of “BGM” (background music) championed by YMO, Summer Breeze was a conscious about face from their debut to create a new signature sound and become masters of summery resort vibes. Its smooth sounds belie the bevy of experimentation utilized on the recording, from vocoders and drum programming to recording guitars direct through the board. Even the iconic cover art, with the surfer wearing an impossibly short crop top, is deceiving in its simplicity – it was one of the most expensive jackets produced by the label at the time, due to its use of special spot colors and custom handlettering. Best-known for his iconic, haunting score to Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street, Bernstein's long sought-after, synth-driven masterpiece seamlessly complements the eerie, suspenseful ambiance of this beloved video rental store classic. For those unfamiliar with Mark Jones' cult favorite film, its plot revolves around a 15th-century imp named Rumpelstiltskin (played by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Max Grodénchik) becoming trapped within a small jade figurine. In modern-day Los Angeles, a recently widowed police officer's wife, accompanied by her baby, stumbles upon a witch's shop and acquires said figurine. This seemingly innocent act inadvertently unleashes the cackling beast, who vehemently demands possession of her child. Under the guidance of Avery, Errol started playing trumpet at the age of nine, though he gravitated toward songwriting and quickly picked up the guitar. Inspired by blues greats the likes of Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Little Milton, 12-year-old Errol began mimicking the sounds that filled southern airwaves. CD edition includes “黒い悲しみのロマンセ / Romance of the Black Pain otherwise Fallin’ Love With,” a live recording by the 1973 lineup of Les Rallizes Dénudés.

Produced in collaboration with The Last One Musique, the new label set up by former members and associates of Les Rallizes Dénudés, MIZUTANI / Les Rallizes Dénudés features newly remastered audio by former Rallizes member Makoto Kubota and new liner notes by Shinya Matsuyama.

LITA EXCLUSIVE: Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl

First-ever reissue of one of the legendary cult band’s three official albums

Remastered from the original analog tapes by Makoto Kubota

Liner notes by Shinya Matsuyama

Fully sanctioned by The Last One Musique

Pressed at Third Man Pressing

Available on LP (black & clear) and CD

DRFT06 -Artist-Les Rallizes Denudes

Released: 9/30/22

Format Detail: LP Black

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Rock

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/8085/0374/files/les-rallizes-denudes-mizutani-les-rallizes-denudes-lita-exclusive_R68WG.png?v=1762346384
