About Experimental (Noise)

Experimental and noise music treat sound itself as the material. Its roots reach back to the Italian Futurists’ 1913 manifesto The Art of Noises, and later to industrial and tape music. In the 1980s the Japanese noise scene around Merzbow and the British power electronics of Whitehouse defined much of what followed. Newer artists such as Wolf Eyes, Pharmakon and Prurient continue to push it forward.

Expect feedback, distortion, tape manipulation, contact microphones, modular synths and live improvisation. The range runs from sustained harsh walls of sound to quiet, strange and unsettling textures. Many releases are limited pressings, and the underground has always leaned heavily on cassettes and small-run vinyl.
