About New Age

New Age grew out of the 1970s and 1980s as musicians turned to space, stillness and melody for a quieter kind of listening. Early touchstones include the synthesizer landscapes of Kitaro, the layered vocals of Enya, the solo piano records of George Winston and the Windham Hill label, and the ambient meditations of Laraaji and Suzanne Ciani.

The sound ranges widely. Some records are acoustic and intimate, built on piano, guitar, flute or harp. Others lean on synthesizers, field recordings, choral voices and long, slowly shifting arrangements. The common thread is a calm, unhurried mood that suits focus, relaxation or late-night listening.

New Age has a long history on cassette, and much of it sounds right on vinyl and CD as well. Browse new and used titles in each format at Paladin Vinyl, and use the genre filters to move between ambient, electronic, classical and world music.
