PRE-ORDER: Landi: La Morte D'orfeo [CD]

La morte d'Orfeo (1619), Stefano Landi's first opera, marks a pivotal moment in the history of Italian opera. Drawing on the myth of Orpheus, it focuses not on his descent into the Underworld but on his final moments and ultimate apotheosis. Rooted in the early pastoral opera tradition while anticipating the Roman Baroque style, this pastoral tragicomedy combines expressive drama, musical innovation, and unexpected comic elements. Through it's inventive vocal writing and forward-looking dramaturgy, La morte d'Orfeo stands as a landmark in the development of seventeenth-century music theatre.
