Experimental hip-hop treats rap's core tools - rhythm, sampling, voice and studio manipulation - as material for radical rearrangement. Producers may use noise, musique concrete, industrial texture, irregular meter, abstract electronics or fragmented samples, while MCs can abandon conventional rhyme structure for spoken word, surreal narrative or heavily processed vocals.

The category has roots in the genre's earliest turntable experimentation but became increasingly visible through independent scenes and later digital production.
