Folk and Viking metal incorporate traditional melody, regional history and nonstandard instrumentation into heavy metal. Folk metal may use fiddle, flute, accordion, acoustic instruments or traditional song forms from many cultures, while Viking metal is more specifically associated with themes and atmospheres drawn from Norse history and mythology. The two overlap frequently but are not identical: one describes musical integration, the other often describes thematic and regional identity.

The styles can intersect with black, death, power and traditional metal, producing everything from raw, atmospheric records to polished, highly melodic albums. What connects them is the deliberate use of cultural or traditional material as a structural part of the music rather than a decorative surface.

The strongest folk-metal records use traditional material structurally: modal melodies, dance rhythms or indigenous instruments shape the composition itself. That distinction separates genuine integration from metal songs that merely add a folk instrument as ornament.
