Production can range from sample-heavy boom bap to Southern, Midwest and experimental styles, so the category is defined more by thematic approach than one beat formula.

Some artists use horror as theatrical fiction, while others combine it with social commentary, surrealism or intensely personal material. That variation is important because horrorcore is broader than simple shock value; at its strongest, it uses genre imagery as a framework for narrative and atmosphere.
