A pesar de la serie de cambios radicales que apuntalaron su creación, el segundo álbum de Scritti Politti, Cupid & Psyche 85, logró lo virtualmente imposible. Si bien todo se amplió (la ambición, el sonido, la audiencia), la visión artística singular que impulsaba al grupo no solo permaneció intacta y sin diluir en estos entornos más grandes, sino que se volvió más inventiva, más aventurera y, en última instancia, más querida. Al conocer al pianista y programador David Gamson mientras realizaba el álbum debut de la banda, Songs To Remember, Green Gartside se dio cuenta de que había encontrado un complemento creativo que lo ayudaría a lograr las ambiciones que tenía para Scritti Politti.
Grabado parcialmente en Nueva York, con varios temas producidos por Arif Mardin (que había trabajado en I Say A Little Prayer de Aretha Franklin, un tema que Green conmemora hermosamente en este disco) y parcialmente en el Reino Unido, con Green y Gamson supervisando directamente el proceso, Cupid & Psyche 85 está impregnado de sintetizadores brillantes y el calor del funk clásico.
