Folk music is a broad tradition built around songs transmitted through communities, oral culture, regional practice and later revival movements. Ballads, work songs, spirituals, dance tunes and topical songs all belong to the field, and the music has continually changed as performers reinterpret older material for new audiences. In the twentieth century, commercial recording and urban folk revivals transformed traditional repertoire into a modern singer-songwriter and protest-music culture.

Because "folk" can refer to both traditional material and contemporary acoustic songwriting, context matters. A field recording, a 1960s revival LP and a modern folk album may use different instruments and production methods, but each engages with the idea of songs as carriers of memory, story and communal identity.

Folk revivals repeatedly reshape the idea of authenticity. Urban performers may learn songs from field recordings, printed collections or earlier commercial records, meaning revival music is often a conscious interpretation of tradition rather than untouched preservation.

Collecting Folk

Folk collecting ranges from early field recordings and 78s to revival-era LPs, private pressings and modern vinyl. Historical anthologies are especially important because many traditional performers never recorded conventional albums; their work survives through regional collections, archives and reissue projects.

Liner notes can add exceptional value in this genre by documenting song origins, recording locations and variant lyrics. Reissues of 1950s and 1960s folk albums often restore original artwork and improve source quality, while contemporary folk continues to use vinyl and limited editions. Collectors can follow songs as well as artists, comparing how the same traditional material changes across generations.
