Traditional folk centers on inherited songs, tunes and performance practices that developed within communities before or alongside commercial recording. Ballads, fiddle tunes, work songs, sea songs, spirituals and regional dance music can all belong, depending on place and tradition. The same piece may exist in many lyrical or melodic variants because oral transmission encourages change rather than fixed authorship.

Twentieth-century collectors, folklorists and revival musicians played a major role in preserving and circulating this repertoire. Their field recordings and song collections shaped later folk revivals, but the music remains rooted in living regional traditions rather than belonging only to the archive.

Traditional repertoire is often identified by variant rather than definitive version. Lyrics, melodies and even titles can change from community to community, so recording provenance is essential when comparing performances.
